What better way to learn how the people of Phuket coped with the COVID pandemic than to ask them?
The Motorcycle Service and Accessories business - Prasut Big Bike, Patong is located on the Sainamyen Road which leads east out of the north end of Patong bay. The business is owned by "Pom." One half of the premises offers motorcycle service and repair, and the other half provides a wide range of motorcycle accessories, original parts, and stickers aimed at the12cc to 250cc motorcycles which are commonplace in Thailand. The shop's breadth of stock was wider than that typically held by shop unit motorcycle accessory stores.
Pom said that this is the second year that sales have been very low since the start of the pandemic at the beginning of 2020. The mechanic in the motorcycle service department had very little to do. The accessories shop depends on the tourist wealth that trickles down to the workers in the town who own motorcycles. Prasut sell a small number of items on the internet.
Pom was curious to know how the COVID situation is in the UK. She was surprised that the UK has a much higher number of daily infections. She said that Thailand had Sinopharm vaccine which she thought was not good for protection against the Delta or "Indian" COVID variant. She asked me which vaccine I had had, and what I thought about Japan hosting the Olympic Games. She thought the Olympics was a bad idea given the pandemic situation.
